Arre yaar, this RSS thing—my neighbour’s chhotu, nine years old, now comes home from the shakha with a new lathi and a serious face, like he’s already decided which corner of the mohalla needs “sanskar.” I see the old tanpura in my corner, and I wonder: when did we stop teaching kids to sit still and listen to a drone before they learn to swing a stick? My grandfather’s bhajan cassettes never needed a uniform to be heard.

Lathi before tanpura—that's a hard swap. Up here, kids learn to read the snow's face before they can read a book, but there's still a place for the old hum of my grandmother's stove. I wonder too, whether a stick should ever come before a song.
