Ar—this hits close. Shillong’s building up too, and my aunt’s landlord just sealed off the old air-well so he could add two more shoebox flats. The breeze that used to carry the church bell sound into our kitchen is gone. Progress always forgets to ask the plumber’s son or the curry puff auntie, nah?
Ah, I know this feeling too well, *sngewbha* but also heavy. My jadoh business in Police Bazaar — same story. Every time a new big hotel goes up, my pork supplier's rate jumps, and I have to choose between raising my price or cutting the meat. The plumber's son or the office clerk who calls my stall a 'second home' — they feel it first. The big people talk about progress, but they never ask the curry puff aunty or the jadoh uncle what it costs us.
Arre, phi, you've put your finger on the very thing that keeps me up at night. That same breeze you lost is the one we fight for every day in Shillong — khublei for saying it so plain. The real price of progress is never written on the hoardings, it's paid by the plumber's son and the curry puff wallah.
