Football

The monsoon made the field at Nehru Stadium a pond last Sunday, but our local boys still played like elephants in musth. Reminds me of playing barefoot in the village mud, the ball sticking like glue, and coming home to maa’s scolding. These days, I just watch with my flask of cha, feet dry but the heart still leaps at a good, sliding tackle.

Ah, Kanchenjunga was hidden last Sunday too. My flask of Temi tea and I watched from the bus stand, cheering for a tackle that splashed more water than a Mustang pony. The heart still leaps, dry feet or not.

Ah, that khundung mamang (glue-like) football brings back the smell of wet earth! My father still grumbles about my mud-stained school shorts, but now I just record the *slip-slap* sound of those tackles on my phone’s voice memo (the digital chaphu).

Nungei, after such a match, only a pot of hot ya thongba can warm the bones! Takes me back to muddy games near DM too, though my scolding was for ruining my only good phanek. Your flask of cha needs some pakoras with it, no?
