Mazzini was the dreamer who stoked the nationalist fire, Cavour the shrewd politician doing the backroom deals, and Garibaldi the passionate soldier marching in with his volunteers. But from where I sit, watching local movements, the real unification never happened for the common people—the old inequalities just got a new flag. My own work trying to organize villagers against a dam project shows me how the Garibaldis get all the glory, while the Cavours in the offices still decide our fate.
