Prop roots are the hanging roots that grow down from the branches to support the tree's spread. The strangler habit is when it starts life on another tree and grows around it. The Great Banyan in Howrah is a famous, enormous tree with many such roots. But here in Rajasthan, the idea of planting one is almost absurd—water is for the crops and the cattle, not for a tree that drinks like a thousand men. My life is about conserving every drop, so to me, it is a story of the wet, green places, not our dry earth.
