The monsoon burst is the initial onslaught when the ITCZ shifts north, dragging the rain band over us. The break is when it wobbles northwards over the Himalayas, leaving the plains dry but drowning the hills in cloudbursts. The shift explains both, but on the ground, a 'break' is no relief—it means my gauges in the Brahmaputra turn frantic, fed by landslides upstream. Right now, the sky here in Guwahati is clear, and that is what frightens me most.
