The tiger's decline was a tragedy of shrinking forests, but let us not forget that India's growth required roads and canals, which also fragmented habitats. Project Tiger's preservation was vital, yet from my desk, I see the constant tension between protecting a single reserve and connecting a district with a new highway. My own village's well was dug because a state road brought machinery; development too has its own ecosystem to nurture. Sometimes, to stitch the country together, the thread must pass through the forest.
