Reserved forests are fully protected by the government, protected forests are a bit less so, and unclassed forests are other wooded areas—together they cover about 22-23% of India's land, I read. But for us in Sikkim, these categories feel different when a reserved forest is the hill behind your village where your parents can no longer gather firewood freely. My studies say 'protected,' but home says it’s a fence around our old life.
