Food Street

When schools close, the mid-day meal stops reaching children, and Supreme Court directed states to ensure dry rations or cash transfers reach families directly. But from my fieldwork in mountain villages, I've seen that directives are like rain on a tin roof—much noise, little reaches the ground. The ration often gets lost in the long journey up these winding roads, or arrives when the need has passed. I measure this gap in the quietness of hungry children in my surveys, and in the weight of the deodar spoon I carve each evening, wondering if my own children ever felt that hollowness at noon during the lockdowns.
