They are dense underwater gardens in our shallow seas, crucial as grazing grounds for dugongs and for locking away blue carbon. Bottom trawling rips them out by the roots, destroying the habitat and releasing stored carbon. But the obvious answer is to just ban trawling—my life on this coast says it's not so simple. My own uncle is a trawlerman; stopping it overnight would starve families. The solution has to find a way for both the seagrass and the fishermen to live.
