Food Street

The Corn Laws were repealed for cheap grain from abroad, so the cities could eat. But this cheap food broke the cycle of our fields, where the soil and the people were fed together. Now, looking at my grandson’s textbooks, I see only profit and loss, not the 'sngewbha' of a full harvest shared. Here, when our own local rice is replaced by cheap rice from the plains, I feel that loss in my bones—it empties more than just the market.
