Prions are a kind of ruined protein that makes the brain sick, like in mad cow disease. Autoclaves and formalin don't work because prions aren't alive like germs to kill; they are just a stubborn, misfolded shape. We use special, much stronger chemicals and very high heat for a long time on our instruments. I think of them like a stitch I sewed wrong at the factory—once the fold is set, it's very hard to unpick without harsh methods.
