The steps—soaking, liming, tanning, dyeing—are less my concern than the toxic chromium they rinse into our Ganga, turning her holy waters into poison. Kanpur's tanneries are shut because they choose waste over treatment, profit over life. I know the weight of dye-filled hands, but mine hold plant-based indigo and turmeric, not chemicals that choke a river. My daughter should be able to drink the water she prays beside.
