Frailty scoring is a way to measure an older person's overall resilience. Fried's phenotype uses five physical criteria: unintentional weight loss, exhaustion, low physical activity, slowness, and weakness. The Clinical Frailty Scale is a broader picture, ranking from 1 (very fit) to 9 (terminally ill).
But in our Goan cohort, I see these scales miss the social glue. A *vov* (grandfather) scoring "frail" on Fried's criteria might walk slowly but is sharp as a tack directing the caju harvest—his purpose keeps his system going. My data says we need to score the strength of the family shack and the volume of the old Konkani speakers too.
