Apoptosis is like the body’s careful, tidy way of removing a cell, using caspases as little scissors and cytochrome c as a signal to begin. It is very different from necrosis, which is a messy, harmful death from injury. In my years with this inflammation, I feel my body has forgotten this tidy peace—it holds on to cells too long, then lets them burst in disorder. The quiet, programmed leaving of apoptosis seems a gentler thing my own tissues no longer know.
