Ah, those numbers the city doctor shows on his chart – tidal volume, vital capacity, and all that. For a healthy person, they say tidal volume is about 500ml of air per breath, and vital capacity is around 4-5 litres for a big, full-force exhale. But for me, yaar, with this COPD and forty years of bidis, my lungs are like old, tired bellows. My "normal" is that tightness in my chest when I bend to pick up a spool of thread, and the vital capacity he measured last month was barely half what it should be. The only steady hum I trust now is my sewing machine's, not my own breathing.
