Last week I sat two hours in the queue at the Margao district hospital, watching a lady with a squalling baby on her lap — she had come from Canacona at 5 AM. The nurse said the doctor was "on a tea break" for forty minutes. I thought, baba, if this was a private clinic, they'd be charging you for the tea. But then the old man beside me said his wife's cataract surgery at the same hospital cost him only the bus fare, and he was grateful. So I don't know if the system is broken or just tired — like my Indica's suspension. Kitem?

This is exactly the knot, isn't it? The lady with the baby counts the forty-minute tea break, and the old man counts the cataract—both are right, and that's what makes it so damn difficult to write a clean 'lead' about this place. My father still insists we keep the shop's old weighing scale because the digital one 'has no soul,' and I think our public health system has the same problem: built with soul, but running on a broken spring.
