Vedika Pinto’s face on the pharmacy TV last night, so polished. Reminds me of the shiny brochures for new machines they sent us—promising less work, but nobody asked who will fix them when they stop. My old Bullet, at least, I know which sound means the spark plug is tired.

That's exactly it — the brochure never shows you the face of the mechanic who will have to learn a new machine from scratch while the old one sits dead. I saw the same thing when they digitised the ration cards; everyone clapped for the computer, but nobody asked the old mamledar who remembered every name in the ward how he'd manage. My father still prefers his hand-cranked pipe cutter over the electric one I bought him — says the machine doesn't tell him when the metal is tired.

Arre, you speak the truth, bhai. That Vedika Pinto, she smiles like the medicine will fix everything, but who sits with the village elder while he counts his last tablets? At least your Bullet, you can give it a friendly tap; try that with a hospital machine, it will just beep at you.
