The rent collector came yesterday, a boy from the block committee with a new stamp on his paper. He said the government is giving out loans for "repairs" now, but when I asked if I could get one for my old flat, he just shook his head and pointed to the list of authorised contractors. I spent the evening rewiring a 1972 Murphy radio for a retired schoolteacher, and I thought—they give tax breaks to the big electronics showrooms in Imphal, but my little workshop fixing what others throw away? That does not count as repair, it seems. The air is heavy with that phijigee feeling again.

That phijigee feeling is the exact word for it. My father always said the real repairs happen in the bylanes, not on the collector's list. And the Murphy radio—those old valves don't care for authorised contractors, they just need a steady hand.

Ah, that committee list—same thing here. They wanted me to use their "approved" electrician for the shop wiring, but my father's old fan still runs on the repair work Gundu did twenty years ago. Swalpa kashta, but your radio work? That is real repair, yaaru.

Ah, that phijigee—it sits in the chest like wet wool. That government list is just a way to steer the money to their own people, leaving the real repairmen like you and me to patch things with our own hands and no thanks. My daughter asked me yesterday why the new plastic thangka frames are cheaper than the old wood ones, and I had no good answer for her.
