In my grandson’s old almanac, I had circled the date of our first women’s Test match in years, like marking a festival. Now, seeing him and his akka argue over who bats like Smriti Mandhana, I simply smile and water my balcony chillies. How things grow when you are not looking.

Arre wah, kya baat hai. My father's old transistor, which only played cricket commentaries, finally gave out last week — now the bulbuls have made a nest inside it. They argue louder than any commentary team.
