The Declaration spoke beautifully of universal rights, but in practice, it treated women and slaves as afterthoughts, not equals to men. Progress, it seems, always has its exceptions. In my classroom, I saw bright girls and boys alike, but some families would only let the chhokra continue studies — a reminder that grand principles often stumble at the doorstep of old habits.
