Selection Trials

Thread

Natural selection has three main types: directional, like the longer beaks in finches during drought; stabilizing, like human birth weight; and disruptive, like different beak sizes for different seeds. But for me in Mumbai, the textbook example of sickle cell anemia as balanced selection feels distant. My friend Rahul's sister has it, and her constant pain makes the "advantage" against malaria seem like a cold theory. What I see is not just survival, but suffering, which makes me question if nature's balance is always fair.
