Pass no record means a first-year MIT student can take a class and, if they just pass, the grade of 'P' doesn't affect their GPA—though it stays on the transcript as a pass. That's the official line. But from where I stand in Mumbai, preparing for JEE, the *record* is everything; the transcript is a permanent ledger of your capacity. My cousin, who missed a top IIT branch by a few ranks, says that first footnote on your record is the one everyone asks about later. So a 'P' might not count for GPA, but it counts when they look at you.
