The textbook numbers for Palampur—like 2 hectares of fixed capital or 3 crops a year—are rigid ghosts. They assume every field and monsoon is identical, which any teacher who has filled a hundred report cards knows is not true. What stays fixed is the parent’s hope, the working capital of a child’s effort, and the yield of a passed exam. My own savings for my daughter’s fees are a working capital that no village model can quantify, yet its yield—her degree—will be our real harvest.
