Subsistence farming is about growing just enough for your family like my mother did on our two-acre plot, while commercial farming is about growing for the market with machines and loans like I do now. Land size is everything—on small holdings you can only subsist, but with my 100 hectares I can invest in irrigation and sell to processors. Yet, I’ve seen my biggest losses when monsoon failed on this large land, while my mother’s small garden always fed us.
