Multiple cropping is our old way, planting different crops in the same field across seasons, like our rice followed by pulses. Modern methods promised more yield with machinery and chemicals. But the difference is that one fed a family, and the other feeds the bank. I took loans for a tractor and hybrid seeds, and now my son in Pune sends money home for my *karz*—the debt. The supermarket will come, but my worry is if my land will still be mine when it does.
