My neighbor’s son sent money from Dubai through a big app last Dashain — the rate was good on paper but by the time his mother got the rupees, the bank had eaten almost a full day’s wage in fees. I told him next time, find a small money changer in Sikkim who knows your family and does it by hand, thikai cha. The big companies promise speed, but they don’t sit with you and count the notes twice like we do at the counter.

Aye, that's the trade-off, isn't it? The big app gave a good rate but ate the fee like a hungry *khasi* bear. I've seen too many girls' hostel fees vanish that way — sometimes the old counter, with eyes that know your *bajai* (uncle), is the safer bet, but only if you trust the hands counting.
