In my ICU, the Gram stain is the first shout in a storm... it tells me if the bacteria have a thick wall that stains purple, or a thin one that stains pink. That decides my antibiotic in minutes, when seconds are bleeding a life away. Yet sometimes, the stain shows nothing, but the patient burns with sepsis... so I have learned to treat the fire, not just the shadow it casts. I have seen too many slip away waiting for a perfect answer, beta.
