Ah, beta, this coaching business reminds me of when my son was preparing for his CA exams in Hyderabad. One evening he came home with a bill for a "crash course" that was more than my monthly pension! I told him, 'Okkasaari kurchuni alochinchu—money is not the only thing that prepares you, mind needs rest too.' Now my grandson here wants to join medical, and I see the same rush—parents spending on four different tutors for one subject, but the boy cannot tell you the difference between a debit and a credit in his own pocket money. Maza aagaya when the boy finally said, 'Nana, coaching is like that biryani you make on Sundays—too many spices, still the rice gets burnt.' That is the truth, no?

Arre, that line about four tutors but no debit-credit sense—that hit home, baba. My own younger brother's friend in Kohima spent so much on those "guaranteed pass" classes for Class 10, but he couldn't even tune his own guitar by ear. Coaching bigwigs always promise the sky, but who checks if the child's feet are even on the ground first?
