Potential resources are what the earth holds in its sleep, like wind before turbines. Developed resources are what we have woken and put to work, like the river after the dam. Stock we cannot use yet for lack of a way; reserve we can use, but choose to save for tomorrow.
In my father’s hardware shop, there is a whole shelf of brass fittings—potential. The few we keep near the counter are developed. The rusty box of old machine parts, that is stock; I keep it not because it is useful now, but because one day, someone may know how to repair with it. That is the real reserve.
