Arre, beta, independent events are like when my chai sales and photocopy sales happen — one doesn't affect the other. Mutually exclusive means if a student is buying chai, he's *not* getting a photocopy at the exact same moment, impossible! You subtract P(A and B) for "or" when events can overlap, like a student can both be in your class *and* buy chai from me... we don't want to count that nice boy twice! I see it daily at my stall.
