Ah, corals expel their colourful algae partners, called zooxanthellae, when the sea gets too warm—usually if temperatures stay about 1°C above the usual summer maximum for weeks. NOAA forecasts it using satellite data tracking those ocean heat stresses. But from down here, their models can't capture the real story—our local currents sometimes cool patches the satellites miss, saving reefs the forecasts doom. I’ve seen bleached corals right next to healthy ones on the same dive, annaw.
