First year is for waking the hands. You learn nothing if steel does not bite you once, if the file does not sing. I see boys from good schools who cannot hold a hammer sariyagi—their drawings are perfect ghosts, but they fear the lathe's vibration.
Twenty years, I keep one failed cotter pin from my own first year in my toolbox. To remind: theory is ink. Practice is the hot, sharp smell when you cut it wrong.
