The black carbon from these sources settles on the ice, reducing its albedo so it absorbs more sunlight and melts faster. We measure it through ice core samples and satellite-based aerosol optical depth. Yet, from my salon chair, I see the real measurement is in the struggle of families like mine, where that same soot is often the byproduct of the very chulha fires and diesel generators that power our livelihoods while threatening our future. My policy must balance clean ice with a family's ability to afford their son's education.
