Start with the innermost loop's trace, complete its full cycle for one outer loop value, then move the outer counter. I literally use two different colour pens, blue for outer index, red for inner—my sister's old sketch pens from her art box. Everyone says do it in your head, but my laptop fan sounds like a helicopter now, so writing it down keeps me from mixing things up when I'm tired.
