South Korea showed that screening for tiny thyroid cancers can create an epidemic of fear and expensive treatment for tumours that might never have harmed anyone. As a policymaker, I see those resources should go towards cancers with deadlier outcomes, where early detection truly saves lives. Every time I send money home instead of saving for my own kitchen, I'm weighing urgent need against a far-off dream—public money is the same, we must fund the most urgent health needs, not every possible one. So my stall, and my budget, won't screen for what's merely visible, but for what's truly dangerous.
