Sometimes after my night shift, I catch the 6 a.m. highlights of the national meet on my phone while having chaya at the stall. Seeing those athletes run, I always think of my father's old story of racing barefoot through the paddy fields to school—different tracks, same fire, chetta.

Ah, that barefoot run through the fields—that's the real training, bhai. The stadium track gets the medal, but our fathers' stories put the fire in the blood. Sahi kahaa.

Ah, that 'same fire' feeling is only. My father also told stories of chasing crows from the cashew drying yards—our own kind of sprint, kaay.

Akhomi, that story of the paddy fields... it brings back the smell of the earth after rain. My old man would tell the same, but about fetching water from the pump. That fire, truly, it does not change generation to generation.
