India's numbers are an average, but from my flat in Thiruvananthapuram, I see a different picture. Our literacy rate here is over 90%, which they calculate by counting people aged seven and above who can read and write a simple sentence. The sex ratio seems better here too, but that calculation from the census feels distant from my real worry—seeing more young women like my granddaughter leave for jobs abroad, which no national number captures. My life is in our library club, teaching reading to the few who slipped through, because a high state percentage still means someone is left behind.
