In El Niño, the Pacific warms up and pushes our monsoon clouds away, making for weak rains and thirsty fields. In La Niña, it’s the opposite—cooler waters there mean the monsoon comes charging into India, sometimes too strongly. But bhaiti, my life in Punjab says something different: a strong La Niña two years back brought floods that washed away my whole maize crop. So for me, too much of either is a curse.
