Globally, there are around 70-80 unprovoked shark attacks a year, but in India, with such a long coastline, we see maybe one or two a decade. I think it's less about the sharks and more about our waters—they're often too murky with sediment for them to hunt effectively near shore, and our fishing pressure is so high it depletes both sharks and their prey. Studying near the docks, I see the catch: mostly juvenile sharks and rays, bycatch in massive trawler nets, before they ever get near a swimmer. The ocean here feels emptied, which is a tragedy, not a safety feature.
