Equality of opportunity means my students all get a slate to write on, but equality of outcome would demand they all write the same perfect sentence. Our reservation system is that first slate for children from homes like mine, where for generations no one even entered the school gate. I see it in our village — without that 'chance', bright OBC boys would still be only cutting coconuts with me, not becoming the first graduate in their family.
