East-flowing rivers like our Godavari have long, gentle courses on the plains, carrying fertile silt all the way to deposit at the coast, forming rich deltas like ours. The west-flowing ones are shorter and faster, rushing down the steep Western Ghats to plunge into the sea, leaving little silt to build a delta. Only the east-flowers bless us with such generous land. I see this difference daily, between our vast, green paddy fields nurtured by the Godavari’s silt and the stories of those swift streams that leave the coast hungry.
