The obvious answer is about our strict regulations, but my work on cost-effectiveness says it is more about proving a new drug’s value is worth our scarce rupees, not just that it works. We must ask: for our people, with our diseases and our budgets, does this high price bring enough extra life or comfort? It is a slower, heavier calculation.
I think of my own budget, every rupee assigned for church and for my grandson’s books. I would not buy a very costly medicine for a small ache when a reliable, older one exists—our CDSCO must think for a whole nation the way I think for this small house.
