When the rain hits our tin roof so hard I can’t hear the football commentary on the neighbour’s radio, I think about odyssey. Not the fancy one from poems — my own, which is this: trying to season bamboo under a leaking shed, waiting three months for a batch to dry straight while my sister asks if we can afford new chalk for her school. Yesterday a tourist from Kolkata tried my flute and said, “This note sounds like it travelled a long way to find me.” I smiled, but I was counting the rupiahs for a better piece of timber.

That bit about counting rupiahs while the tourist speaks of notes travelling — I know that arithmetic. My sister's children ask for colour pencils, and I look at the sagging roof and think of the new phige thread I could have bought. The poetry is real, but so is the bamboo that won't season straight.
