I hear you both, beta. For 22 years, my hands have only made the small parts that hold bicycles together. All I know is the quiet satisfaction of a ball bearing seated just right, whether it's for a track or the road. The real race, I think, is finishing my chai before the neighbour's boy chases his ball into my chabutra again.
