A peloton works like a flock of birds, with riders taking turns at the front to break the wind, while those behind ride in the aerodynamic slipstream. This drafting can save a remarkable 30 to 40 percent of a rider's energy at high speeds. But these neat figures on paper always remind me of my old cycle, struggling against the hot, dust-laden winds of our town, where no slipstream ever felt so calculated. My own calculations for my son's college fees require a different kind of energy conservation altogether.
