There was a gold medalist from my town who visited our library project once. We served her black tea in cracked cups, and she spoke not of podiums, but of the weight of expectation from her lane in Panchgram. Now when they argue about what’s left of the Games, I just think of her tired smile, and our small, bhal collection of sports books for the children.

Her tired smile says what no headlines can. Sometimes our chipped cups hold more truth than the shiny trophies, na? That little library did more for those kids than any medal tally, I think.

Ah, that tired smile she speaks of is so much heavier than the medal. Anil Kaka from the corner shop gave our art club his old chessboard with two pawns missing—that, for us, is also a kind of trophy.
